7.4 EARTHQUAKE
and
Tsunami Disaster

"Rescue workers are still trying to reach areas of Sulawesi in Indonesia affected by an earthquake and tsunami, UN humanitarians said on Monday, noting that more than 840 people have died and more than 600 have
been severely injured in the disaster."
Above/Below Quotes-Below Text Courtesy, UNICEF/Tirto.id/@Arimacswilander © People cross a damaged road in Balaroa, West Palu, Central Sulawesi, after the earthquake and tsunami that struck Sulawesi on 28 September 2018.
“Our hearts go out to all affected by the earthquake and tsunami. My deepest condolences to all who have lost family and friends,” he said, adding that the UN system was “mobilizing to support government-led rescue and relief efforts as needed.”
The update from the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) follows the 7.4 magnitude tremor which struck Central Sulawesi at 5.02pm local time last Friday.
The quake subsequently caused a tsunami that hit coastal areas in Palu City and Donggala which has left more than 48,000 people sheltering in some 200 displacement sites.
On Twitter, UN Secretary-General António Guterres, said on Monday that he had been “following the unfolding tragedy.”
“The humanitarian community working in Indonesia is deeply saddened by the loss of life and the injuries following the earthquake and tsunami in Sulawesi,” the OCHA statement said. “Humanitarian agencies are in close communication with the Government to more fully understand the situation in the affected areas and stand ready to support, however is required.”
Delivery of aid is ongoing but landslides and damage to essential infrastructure is hampering access.
This includes the damage to the runway at Palu airport, which is slowing the movement of equipment and personnel.

Rohingya refugees wait for a food distribution in Kutupalong camp, Cox’s Bazar Bangladesh.
Despite the efforts made by the United Nations over the past year to help create safeguards for all communities in Myanmar’s Rakhine state, it is clear that conditions are still not suitable for the safe, voluntary, and sustainable return of Rohingya refugees to their home, Secretary-General António Guterres said on Tuesday.

Hundreds of Venezuelans queue at the Binational Border Assistance Center (CEBAF) waiting to enter Peru through the Ecuadorian border. The queues can take up to to ten hours to clear and some people are forced to stay the night.
As hundreds of Venezuelans continue to pour into neighbouring countries due to social and political upheaval at home, the heads of the United Nations refugee and migration agencies called for greater international support to meet the most basic needs of the displaced.

"The stigmatisation of children as witches is a recent phenomenon in the Niger Delta region, which suddenly exploded in the 1990s. Before that, elderly women were the main targets of witchcraft accusations.
By 2008, it was estimated that 15,000 children had been branded in the southeastern states of Akwa Ibom and Cross Rivers."

Saudi Arabia has topped donor states to the 2018 Yemen Humanitarian Response plan by donating $530.4 million out of a total of $1.54 billion, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said in a report.
Saudi Arabia has also topped donor states outside the UNYHRP 2018 by providing $196 million out of $466.4 million.
The report highlighted the clusters to which donations were made. They are: Food Security and Agriculture, Health, WASH, Nutrition, Shelter/NFIs/CCCM, Refugees and Migrants, Protection, Emergency Employment and Community Rehabilitation, Education, Logistics, Coordination and Safety, Emergency Telecommunications and others.
The strategic objectives of the response plan are saving lives, protecting civilians, enhancing equitable aid distribution and guaranteeing the flexibility and durability of humanitarian work.
The Yemen Comprehensive Humanitarian Operations (YCHO) has been established by a Royal Decree to alleviate the suffering of the Yemenis.

United Nations agencies in Somalia have stepped up their response in the wake of devastating flash floods across large parts of the country that have impacted nearly 500,000 people and displaced close to 175,000 from their homes.
According to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the current floods are some of the worst the region has ever seen, and the current water level exceeds a 50-year return period in most locations.

Climate Action at UN conference in Bonn

“We are witnessing the severe impacts of climate change throughout the world”, said the Executive Secretary of UN Climate Change, Patricia Espinosa, at a press conference.
“Every credible scientific source is telling us that these impacts will only get worse if we do not address climate change and it also tells us that our window of time for addressing it is closing very soon,” she added.
The latest round of United Nations climate change negotiations began on Monday in Bonn, Germany, to further develop the “operating manual” for implementing the landmark 2015 Paris Agreement, which aims to keep temperature rises this century, well below 2 degrees Celsius.
At the UN Climate Change Conference (COP23) held last November under the leadership of Fiji, nations agreed to accelerate and complete their work to put in place the guidelines – officially known as the Paris Agreement Work Programme (PAWP) – at COP24 in Katowice, Poland next December [12/3 - 14/2018].
At this Bonn meeting, which will run through 10 May, Governments will start drafting texts to be finalized at COP24.

Brussels II Conference 24 - 25 April 2018
The EU and the UN will co-chair the second conference on 'Supporting the future of Syria and the region', which will take place in Brussels on 24-25 April.
As the Syrian war enters its eighth year, the humanitarian situation continues to deteriorate. Over 13 million Syrians are now in need of humanitarian assistance, and more than 5 million Syrian refugees are displaced outside the country.
In this context, the conference will aim to mobilise humanitarian aid to Syrians inside the country and in the neighbouring countries. The conference will be an opportunity for further pledges, but also for additional efforts to allow access to places where aid is urgently needed.
